SSG-640SP-E1CR90 is a 4U top-loading storage server with 90 hot-swap 3.5-inch SAS/SATA bays plus four internal NVMe bays on dual Intel Xeon Scalable processors, 2600 W Titanium redundant power and 2x 10GbE networking. SSG-540P-E1CTR45 is the single-socket variant at 45 hot-swap bays with SAS hardware RAID.

Which one should you choose?

90 bays in 4U is density that changes the per-drive economics

At 90 hot-swap 3.5-inch bays in a single 4U chassis, SSG-640SP-E1CR90 fits more raw capacity per rack unit than most general-purpose servers with add-on JBODs, which changes the cost-per-TB calculation for a large capacity-tier storage build significantly in its favour.

This is a server, not a turnkey storage array; the software stack is your choice

SSG-640SP-E1CR90 runs standard Xeon processors and needs a software-defined storage stack (Ceph, MinIO, ZFS, or similar) installed and managed; it does not ship with a storage OS or a support contract for that layer the way a turnkey array does. Budget for that software and its administration separately.

Single-socket SSG-540P suits a lighter-compute, higher-density-per-dollar role

SSG-540P-E1CTR45’s single Xeon socket and SAS hardware RAID target archive or backup-tier storage where raw compute matters less than capacity and RAID reliability; a genuinely different role from SSG-640SP-E1CR90’s higher bay count and dual-socket compute headroom.

Internal NVMe bays on SSG-640SP-E1CR90 are for metadata, not bulk capacity

The four internal NVMe bays are the right place for a software-defined storage system’s metadata or journal, kept separate from the 90 bulk SAS/SATA bays for performance reasons; do not plan to use them as general-purpose fast storage for the whole system.

Top-loading access is a real operational detail for a 90-bay chassis

SSG-640SP-E1CR90 is a top-loading design, meaning drives are serviced from above rather than through the front bezel; plan rack placement with enough clearance above the unit to pull the lid, which is a different rack-row layout consideration than a standard front-loading server.

Where it fits, and where it does not

Fits a capacity-tier or archive storage build running a software-defined storage stack, where cost per TB and bay density matter more than raw compute. Does not fit a turnkey storage array requirement; see the Storage group’s array pages; and does not fit a compute-heavy role given the modest processor headroom relative to bay count.
