Supermicro X13 Hyper SuperServer: 1U and 2U rack servers

The X13 Hyper line runs 4th generation Xeon Scalable across four codes: SYS-121H-TNR (1U, up to 12x 2.5-inch drives), SYS-221H-TNR and SYS-221H-TN24R (2U, up to 24 drives), and SYS-621H-TN12R (2U, 12x 2.5-inch). All four take 32 DIMMs of DDR5-4800 and dual AIOM slots for up to 400G networking.

Source of the values: Supermicro X13 SuperServer family brochure (Hyper section). Excel lists “SYS-112H-TN” as a fourth code in this family; we could not find that exact code in the X13 brochure we hold and have not included it. The four codes above (SYS-121H-TNR, SYS-221H-TNR, SYS-221H-TN24R, SYS-621H-TN12R) are the ones the brochure documents for this Hyper line. An en dash means the manufacturer does not publish that value in the source we hold; we do not fill it in with an estimate. Confirm every figure against the current manufacturer document before it is written into a contract.

Which one should you choose?

The suffix tells you the drive count, read it before ordering

TN24R takes up to 24x 2.5-inch drives in 2U for storage-performance roles, while TN12R stays at 12x 2.5-inch in the same 2U height for a more compute-balanced configuration. Two servers that look identical from the front differ in exactly this suffix, so match it to the drive count actually needed.

1U SYS-121H-TNR is a genuine compute-and-storage combination, not a compromise

At up to 12x 2.5-inch NVMe/SAS/SATA in a 1U chassis with dual 4th Gen Xeon, SYS-121H-TNR packs more drive density into 1U than many 2U servers in our range offer, which matters for a row that needs both compute and moderate storage density without spending 2U of rack height.

Telco-optimised variants exist outside this exact code set

Supermicro’s X13 Hyper family also includes short-depth, NEBS Level 3 carrier-grade Hyper-E variants (SYS-221HE-FTNR/FTNRD) with optional -48V DC power for telco environments; outside the four standard codes quoted here. Ask us if the deployment is a telco central office or edge site rather than a standard data hall.

Dual AIOM slots future-proof the networking choice

PCIe 5.0 AIOM slots supporting up to 400G on all four codes mean the networking card can be upgraded as the row’s switch fabric evolves, without replacing the server. Order the server now with the networking speed you need today and treat the AIOM slot as a future upgrade path, not a one-time decision.

Where it fits, and where it does not

Fits a data hall wanting configurable drive density (12 to 24 drives) across matched 1U/2U Intel chassis with a clear upgrade path on networking. Does not fit a telco NEBS deployment; ask about the Hyper-E variants for that; and does not fit a workload needing AMD’s core economics, where the A+ line is the match.
