NetShelter Rack PDU Advanced 9000: metered and switched rack PDUs

The NetShelter Rack PDU Advanced 9000 series is Schneider Electric’s current metered and switched rack PDU line, available in 0U vertical and 1U horizontal formats. Metered means you can see the load; switched means you can turn an individual outlet off and on remotely. Codes run from APDU9941 through APDU10250 and encode the format, the input rating and the outlet configuration.

Which one should you choose?

Metered, switched, or both

Metering answers the question you have when adding a server: how much headroom is left on this feed. Switching answers the one you have at three in the morning: can I power-cycle this machine without going to site. They are different problems and different budgets. Per-outlet metering plus switching is the full specification and it costs accordingly.

0U or 1U

A 0U strip mounts vertically in the rear side channel and takes no usable rack height, which is why dense installations default to it. It requires the cabinet to have the right brackets and enough rear depth. A 1U horizontal unit is easier to retrofit into an existing rack but costs a slot, and in a full 42U rack that slot is expensive.

Sizing the input

Match the PDU input rating to the circuit feeding the rack, not to the sum of the equipment nameplates. Servers draw a fraction of their supply rating in normal operation, and sizing on nameplate produces an oversized feed you then pay for in cable and breaker. Give us the actual measured or estimated rack load and the circuit you have.

Two PDUs, two feeds

A resilient rack has two PDUs on separate supplies so that dual-corded equipment survives losing one. That only works if the two feeds are genuinely independent upstream. If they share a breaker or a UPS, you have two strips and one point of failure, which is a common and expensive misunderstanding.

Network and monitoring

These units report over the network, which means they need an address, a monitoring platform and a place in your access control. Decide the protocol and the naming convention before installation; renaming and re-addressing forty PDUs after they are cabled is slow work.

Firmware and lifecycle

An intelligent PDU is a networked device with a firmware lifecycle, and a rack full of them is a small fleet. Agree the update policy and who owns it at the design stage, because forty PDUs on three different firmware versions is an operational problem that grows quietly.
