APC NetShelter SX: enclosed server and networking cabinets

NetShelter SX is APC’s mainline enclosed rack cabinet: a reversible perforated door, half-height lockable side panels and roof cable-entry slots across a range that spans 24U to 48U and 600 or 750 mm width. It is the default choice for a data hall standardising on one cabinet family for mixed server, storage and networking equipment.

Source of the values: APC by Schneider Electric, Enclosure and rack systems brochure. Static load and colour are not published for the AR31xx/AR33xx range in the brochure we hold; the roof, half-height side panels and toolless mounting rails are common across the range. An en dash means the manufacturer does not publish that value; we do not fill it in with an estimate. Confirm every figure against the current manufacturer document before it is written into a contract.

The references we quote in this family are AR3100, AR3105, AR3107, AR3150, AR3300, AR3305, AR3307, AR3350, AR3157 and AR3104. Send us the U height, the width and depth your rack row allows, and we will confirm availability and lead time.

Which one should you choose?

Width is a networking decision more than a server decision

The 750 mm wide references (AR3150, AR3350, AR3157) exist specifically for networking and blade applications where side-to-side cable management needs more room than a 600 mm frame gives. If the rack is mostly 1U/2U servers, 600 mm is usually enough; if it carries a lot of switching, check the 750 mm option before committing to the narrower frame.

1200 mm depth is for density, not just for cable slack

The 1200 mm deep references (AR3300, AR3305, AR3307, AR3350) are positioned for medium-to-high-density servers, where the extra 130 mm over the 1070 mm frame accommodates longer chassis and rear cabling without the door interfering. Measure your longest server chassis before choosing the 1070 mm frame to save cost.

Static load is not published, so ask before a heavy install

Unlike some competitors, APC’s brochure for this range does not carry a per-model static load figure. For a rack that will carry storage arrays or dense blade chassis near the weight limit, ask us to confirm the load rating with Schneider Electric before the floor loading calculation is finalised.

The reversible door is a real installation convenience

Because the perforated front door can be reversed on site, the same physical unit can open from either side depending on how the row is laid out, which matters when a row plan changes after the cabinets have already been ordered.

AR3104 is the compact exception in the range

At 24U, AR3104 is roughly half the height of the rest of the family, aimed at edge closets and small comms rooms rather than a full data hall. Its width and depth are not published in the documents we hold; confirm them with us before specifying it for a tight space.

Where it fits, and where it does not

Fits a data hall or comms room standardising on one enclosed cabinet family for mixed IT equipment. Does not fit a site needing sealed sound/EMI containment, where NetShelter CX is the right family, or a site needing a much higher static load rating, where Rittal VX IT or the Minkels Nexpand carry a published figure.

What we need in order to quote it

  • U height and rack width/depth needed for the equipment planned
  • Whether networking density requires the 750 mm wide frame
  • Static load requirement, since it is not in the published brochure
  • Row layout and which side the door should open from
