ABB Conceptpower DPA 500: 100 to 500 kW, parallel to 3 MW

Conceptpower DPA 500 is ABB’s modular UPS for the 100 to 500 kW band, and frames can be paralleled up to 3 MW. That combination is unusual: a mid-range product that does not force a platform change when a site grows into megawatt territory. It uses the same decentralised parallel architecture as the rest of the DPA line.

Which one should you choose?

A growth path without a platform change

Most mid-range families end where they end, and outgrowing one means a new product, new spares and new operator training. Paralleling to 3 MW means a site can start at 200 kW and reach megawatt scale on the same architecture. That matters most where the growth is real but the timing is uncertain.

Two levels of modularity

Capacity grows inside a frame by adding modules, and beyond the frame by adding frames. The two behave differently in cost and in installation effort. Decide which level your growth will use, because it changes both the first purchase and the electrical design around it.

Redundancy at module or frame level

N+1 can be built with one spare module in a frame, or with a spare frame in a parallel system. The first is far cheaper; the second protects against faults the first cannot. Which one the specification demands should be settled before the single-line diagram.

Paralleling needs its own switchgear

Frames that work together require the switchgear and control wiring that lets them share the load correctly. That hardware is a separate line item and a separate design task, and it is the part most often missing from a first budget. Ask for the parallel arrangement to be priced with the frames.

Where it fits, and where it does not

Fits an installation between 100 and 500 kW today with a credible path toward higher capacity, or a parallel system up to 3 MW. Does not fit a fixed small load where a monolithic unit costs less, and does not fit a site that will never exceed 100 kW.
