Liebert ITA2 and GXT5: 1 to 40 kVA, rack or tower
Liebert ITA2 and GXT5 cover 1 to 40 kVA in rack and tower formats. GXT5 sits at the smaller end and ITA2 extends the range upward, which together take a site from a single communications cabinet to a well-populated server room. The 40 kVA ceiling is unusually high for a family that still installs like rack equipment.

Source of the values: Vertiv Liebert ITA2 5-40 kVA brochure. The ITA2 brochure publishes four rack dimensions and five weights against seven ratings without a one-to-one mapping, so those cells are left blank rather than guessed. An en dash means the manufacturer does not publish that value; we do not fill it in with an estimate. Confirm every figure against the current manufacturer document before it is written into a contract.

Which one should you choose?
A wider ceiling than most rack classes
Many rack-format families stop near 20 kVA. Reaching 40 kVA in the same installation style means a server room can grow substantially before it needs a floor-standing frame, dedicated switchgear and a separate battery cabinet. On a site that dislikes electrical work, that is a real advantage.
GXT5 or ITA2
The two names mark different points in the range rather than different philosophies. Give us the load and the format and the model follows; comparing them feature by feature before knowing the kVA wastes a round of questions.
Format decides installation, not performance
Rack orientation puts the unit in the cabinet it protects and costs U. Tower orientation frees the U and takes floor space instead. Neither changes the electrical behaviour, so decide it from the room rather than the datasheet.
Runtime beyond the internal battery
Extending autonomy in this class means additional battery modules, and each module occupies rack units. Count the U you are giving up before promising a runtime figure, because in a full cabinet those units are the most expensive space on the site.
Where it sits in the cabinet
A rack UPS belongs at the bottom of the cabinet, which lowers the centre of gravity and lets battery packs stack above it. Plan the U layout before ordering, because moving live equipment to make room later is the expensive way to discover this.
Where it fits, and where it does not
Fits an edge site or server room from a single cabinet up to 40 kVA where installation should stay within IT scope rather than becoming an electrical project. Does not fit a data hall, and does not fit a load that will clearly exceed 40 kVA within the asset life.
What we need in order to quote it
- Load in kVA and the growth expected in the room
- Rack or tower, and the U free if rack
- Input circuit rating and socket type
- Runtime target and whether extended battery packs fit
- Monitoring protocol and whether a network card is required
