Galaxy VL: 200 to 500 kW three-phase UPS

Galaxy VL is Schneider Electric’s three-phase UPS for the 200 to 500 kW band, offered at 480 and 400 V. It sits directly above Galaxy VS in the same portfolio and below Galaxy VX, which makes it the natural answer when a room has outgrown a 150 kW frame but is nowhere near megawatt scale. Its selling point is footprint: the frame is compact for its rating, which matters when the electrical room was sized years ago.

Which one should you choose?

Why this band exists

Between 200 and 500 kW a site is usually a full data hall rather than a server room, but it is still fed from one switchboard and cooled by one system. Galaxy VL is built for exactly that shape of installation: enough capacity to carry a hall, small enough that it does not demand a purpose-built plant room.

Voltage matters here

This family is offered at 480 V and 400 V. Confirm the site voltage before anything else, because it narrows the code list immediately and it is not a field-changeable property.

Compact is a room decision

On a retrofit the deciding factor is rarely efficiency; it is whether the frame fits through the door and leaves service clearance once installed. Ask for the footprint and weight at your rating before the layout is fixed.

Batteries are a separate line

The frame is fixed by the load; the battery is fixed by how long you must survive without mains. At 200 kW and above, anything beyond a few minutes means a battery cabinet with its own footprint, ventilation and floor loading. Settle both at the same time, because discovering on installation day that there is no room beside the frame is expensive.

Retrofit or new build

On a new build the frame is chosen alongside the switchboard and neither constrains the other. On a retrofit the switchboard already exists, and the useful first question is what the existing board can deliver rather than what the load wants. Where it fits, and where it does not

Fits a mid-size to large data hall, a hospital or an industrial site with a committed load in the 200 to 500 kW band. Does not fit a room under 150 kW, where Galaxy VS costs less and installs faster, and does not fit above 500 kW, where the conversation moves to Galaxy VX or VXL.
