NetShelter Rack ATS: 1U transfer switch, 10 to 32 A

The NetShelter Rack ATS is a 1U rack-mounted automatic transfer switch with two inlets and a bank of outlets, rated between 10 and 32 A at 100 to 230 V. It exists so that single-corded equipment can be fed from two independent supplies and survive losing one of them. The model list covers the input plug, the voltage and the outlet configuration.

Which one should you choose?

It solves the single-corded problem

Dual-corded servers already have two power supplies and need no help. The equipment that strands a rack is the single-corded box: a switch, an appliance, an older server. A rack ATS gives that device two feeds and one cord, which is usually far cheaper than replacing it with a dual-corded model.

The two feeds have to be genuinely separate

A rack ATS placed downstream of two PDUs that share one breaker or one UPS adds a component without adding resilience. Trace both feeds back to their source before specifying the switch. This is the most common mistake we see in rack-level redundancy, and it is not visible from inside the cabinet.

Rating and plug type decide the code

Between AP4421 and AP4453 the differences are current rating, input voltage and connector type rather than function. A 32 A unit and a 16 A unit behave identically; they simply carry different loads and use different inlets. Give us the rack load and the socket you are plugging into and the code follows.

Transfer time versus a panel ATS

This device transfers in milliseconds, fast enough that connected equipment does not notice. A panel-type ATS takes seconds, which is fine when a UPS covers the gap but not acceptable for an unprotected load. The two are complementary rather than alternatives.

The total load on the rack in amps, the supply voltage, the inlet type on your PDUs and the outlet mix your equipment needs. If the rack already has two PDUs, tell us their model, because the ATS has to plug into them.
