Vertiv Geist Upgradeable rPDU: field-replaceable monitoring

The Geist Upgradeable rPDU (GU) line separates the power strip from its intelligence: the monitoring module, designated IMD, plugs into the PDU and can be replaced in the field. That means a basic strip can become metered or monitored later without pulling the PDU out of the cabinet or dropping the load. Codes GU10018, GU20016 and GU30018 identify the power section, and the IMD-01 to IMD-03E modules identify the monitoring level.

Which one should you choose?

Why a replaceable module matters

In most PDUs the electronics and the outlets are one assembly, so upgrading the monitoring means replacing the whole strip, which means de-energising the rack. Here the module comes out separately. If your monitoring requirement is likely to change, or if you are buying now for a room whose management platform is not yet chosen, that is a real option value.

Buy the power section for the decade

The strip itself, the outlets, the input rating and the physical format are what you cannot change later. Specify those against the rack’s ultimate configuration, not its first year. The monitoring level is the part you are allowed to defer, so defer that instead of deferring capacity.

Failure of a module is not failure of the rack

When monitoring electronics fail in a conventional PDU, the usual remedy is a maintenance window. With a separable module the power path stays up while the module is swapped. That distinction is worth most in sites you cannot easily schedule downtime for, which is precisely where remote monitoring gets specified in the first place.

What we need to quote

The input current and phase, the outlet count and type, the format, and which monitoring level you want on day one. If you are standardising across several sites, tell us; matching IMD modules across a fleet is easier to manage than matching PDUs.

Standardising across a fleet

Where the same PDU model is deployed across many racks, the operational value comes from every strip behaving identically: same interface, same naming, same alerting. That is easier to hold over time with a separable monitoring module, because the power section can stay in place across a monitoring generation change.
