Dell PowerEdge R series (Intel): 1U, 2U and 4U rack servers
The PowerEdge R series is Dell’s Intel-based rack server line, covering 1U, 2U and 4U chassis on 4th and 5th generation Xeon processors. The model number tells you most of what you need: R250 and R350 are entry 1U, R660 and R760 are the mainstream 1U and 2U, and R860 and R960 are the four-socket machines. We quote configurations, not model names.

Which one should you choose?
The chassis decides what fits, not the badge
1U takes low-profile cards and small fans. 2U takes full-height expansion, more drive bays and better thermals for high-TDP processors. 4U is what you buy when the expansion or the cooling requirement will not fit anywhere else. Choose the chassis from the card and drive count first, then pick the processor.
xs and xa suffixes are not decoration
An xs model is a cost-optimised variant of the same generation with a narrower processor and memory range. An xa model is built around accelerators. Buying an xs because it is cheaper and then discovering the memory ceiling is a common and avoidable mistake, so check the ceiling against your three-year plan.
Two or four sockets
R660 and R760 are two-socket machines and cover the great majority of workloads. R860 and R960 are four-socket, which you buy for a single large in-memory workload rather than for general virtualisation. Four sockets cost disproportionately more per core, so the case has to be specific.
Configuration is the quote
Two servers with the same model number can differ by a factor of several in price depending on processor, memory, drives, network cards and warranty level. Rack fit and power
Confirm the rack depth, the available U and the PDU outlet type before ordering. A 2U server with cable management arms needs more depth than the chassis figure suggests, and a rack full of them changes what the feed and the PDU have to carry.
